AE downgrading

AE downgrader for older After Effects versions

AE downgrading solves one specific handoff problem: a .aep saved in a newer After Effects version will not open in an older install. This guide explains when to downgrade, how to pick a target, and what to check afterwards.

Downgrading is about version compatibility

An After Effects project records the application version that saved it. Older AE releases may refuse a newer project, so the file has to be rewritten into a structure the target version can read.

Choose the target from the receiving machine

Base the target on the version your collaborator or client can actually open. If they are on AE 2021, choose 2021 or an older available target. When possible, stay close to the source version to keep more project detail intact.

Supported AE targets run from 2018 to 2026

The After Effects line currently supports AE 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. Older releases such as CS6 and CC 2017 are not supported yet.

Local browser conversion helps with private work

The AE conversion runs in your browser, so the .aep file is not uploaded to a server. The original stays untouched, and the result is downloaded as a new project file.

Check expressions, effects and links after conversion

Features that do not exist in the target version cannot be preserved perfectly. Open the result in the target After Effects release and check comp structure, expressions, fonts and media links before delivery.

  1. 1

Open the AE downgrader and drop in the .aep project.

  2. 2

Pick the target version your recipient can open, preferably close to the source.

  3. 3

Download the new older-version project and verify it in the target After Effects release.

Questions about this page

Does AE downgrading upload my project?
No. The After Effects conversion runs locally in the browser. The .aep file is not sent to a server and the original is not overwritten.
Can AE be downgraded to CS6?
Not currently. The oldest supported After Effects target on this site is AE 2018.
Will every effect survive the downgrade?
Not always. Anything the target version cannot represent may be removed or simplified so the older application can open the project.
